Saint Mary's Pro-Cathedral Girls' Choir was inaugurated at the Vigil Mass of Pentecost on May 30th 2009. Canon John Flaherty, representing the Archbishop, dedicated the Choir to Saint Mary, their Patron, and invoked the Holy Spirit to guard and protect their life and work. 30 Girl Choristers were robed in new choir robes specially commissioned for the occasion.
Several women associated with the Pro-Cathedral, influenced by the vision of Blanaid Murphy, Director of the Palestrina Choir, began some years ago to lay foundations for a Girls' Choir which would provide for girls the same opportunity to be involved in the music and liturgical life of the Pro-Cathedral which boys have had since 1903. With tenacity, they managed to secure a foundation endowment, mainly through the generosity of Mr. Robert Bourke and others, which will see the choir through its foundational phase. The foundational value of the Choir is to allow meaningful participation to young girls, women and their families in the life of the Church. This is seen by the Choir Committee as a valuable, lay inspired initiative in contributing to the Diocesan Year of Evangelisation.
St Mary's Pro-Cathedral Girls' Choir sing on Tuesdays at 5.45pm Mass and at weekend liturgies as announced during choir term.
